FOUNDATION PRESS RELEASE
Telamon Insurance and Financial Network celebrated in the achievement of our five Telamon Insurance and Financial Network Charitable Foundation Scholars at our first annual Awards Luncheon NEWTON, Mass., February 9, 2006 - Michael Susco wanted to up the ante in his commitment to the special-needs education community that he has served for 20 years. His company, Telamon Insurance & Financial Network, has carved out a niche providing insurance for not-for-profit private schools in New England. In February, the newly-created Telamon Insurance & Financial Network Charitable Foundation and keynote speaker, State Representative Robert K. Coughlin, will award its first scholarships to special education teachers. Five individual recipients may use the $1,000 scholarships in any way that advances their educational goals. “The money can be used for books, travel, tuition, or compensation for time off,” states Susco. “It’s unusual to have unrestricted grants in non-profits. Basically, we just wanted to make it possible for these teachers to pursue studies that allow them to further their education in the field of special education. People who go into these specialized teaching fields are motivated more by personal commitment than economic advancement, and frequently the money just isn’t there.”
Telamon, a word that means “support,” goes far beyond simply providing insurance for their clients. “We want them to look at us the way they would look at their lawyer, their accountant, their banker. We’re there to help them be successful. We’re there to help them protect their assets. And in the case of education, we wanted to help schools protect their most valuable assets – their teachers.”
The five finalists are Johan de Besche from The Learning Center for Deaf Children (Framingham, MA), Jerome Gill from The Castle School (Cambridge, MA), Melissa Laidlaw from Cardinal Cushing Centers (Hanover, MA), Denise McCall from The Holden School, Inc., (Charlestown, MA), and Susan Widmer from Harbor Schools and Family Services (Amesbury, MA). Their plans involve a continuing course of study, either for certifications, further technical skills, or advanced degrees.
Telamon Insurance & Financial Network Charitable Foundation is administered by four trustees, Michael Susco, Christopher DeLorey, Deidre A. Durling, Nicholas A.R. Hofner and Henry W. Clark, Esq. Its main goal is to provide scholarships to individuals who are presently teaching in licensed approved not-for-profit private special education schools or working in a licensed human services corporation.
Applications for 2008 will be accepted from January 2007 through October. |
